River Wye, Llangoed Beat
April 16th
The weather forecast was for showers throughout the day. But whilst the sun didn't actually shine down on us, it did turn out to be a great day for fishing. The air was misty; positively damp, the clouds concealed the sun and the wind was a kindly upstream one. And the river, which for so long had kept us away, was low and clear.
Llangoed is a delightful beat. There is a lot of water and it is very varied. You can pick from fast water and boulders, pocket water, classic pools and runs, to deep slow glides and gutters. I think we tried them all. The morning started with a few grannom over the river, egg laying. Not enough admittedly, but a good sign. As the morning grew old, more grannom appeared and the first rising fish were spotted. The hatch was a leisurely affair, as were the rises. Most fish were "oncers". But fish were caught. Perhaps the most curious was the 14 inch trout that had swallowed a 6 inch trout the previous night.
Other fish were more modest in their tastes and keen to take dry flies as well as nymphs. The fishing was fun, and mating toads in the river and the Buzzards and Common Sanpipers above it added greatly to the experience. The water is still cold but the river is waking up.
